Development of a generic coupler for parallel and distributed multi-disciplinary simulations on the Japanese ITBL grid infrastructure

Computational science has always played an import role in nuclear engineering because it is quite difficult, if not impossible, to carry out experiments on the actual full-scale reactors in operation. We have been developing a numerical simulation infrastructure for carrying out numerical experiments on the virtual reactors constructed within computers. In order to understand the physical behavior of a reactor, interactions among various physial phenomena must be considered and understood. Therefore, a generic coupler has been developed to connect various software and hardware for the purposes of coupled simulations. Since this type of simulation requires large amount of computational resources, the coupler development is carried out on the ITBL GRID infrastructure. The development of this coupler and its applications to parallel and distributed coupled simulations with future development plans are reported.

Shape optimization using adjoint variable method for reducing pressure drag and its application to ITBL

To obtain optimal designed shape effectively, a parallel computing method of determining Armijo's line-search step size of the adjoint variable method is proposed. The adjoint valiable method is based on the Lagrange multiplier method (a conditional variational principle), and consists of the state equation, the adjoint equation and the sensitivity equation. The equations for decreasing the fluid drag of shaped surface under a constant volume condition are formulated. To solve the equations effectively by the steepest descent method, the parallel algorithm that finds the Armijo's line-search step size is implemented by using ITBL (the grid system of Japan's shared super computers attached to the network). Using this parallel method, the calculation cost can be reduced.

Development of a coupler for parallel simulations of weakly coupled systems on the grid-computing environment

It is impossible to carry out a controlled laboratory experiments on an operational full-scale power plant. Therefore, construction of a testbed to assess the safety of such systems by numerical means is believed to be meaningful. At CCSE/JAERI, a project to develop a numerical testbed to assess the safety of nuclear reactors have been begun. Simulations of such complex systems will inevitably require tremendous amount of computational resources. Therefore, the numerical testbed is constructed on the ITBL Grid middleware. A prototype of a generic software coupling interface was developed to couple various simulation software within the ITBL Grid environment to execute large-scale multi-disciplinary simulations on the testbed. This coupler and its application to some fluid-structure problems will be illustrated.

Towards coupling arbitrary software on the Japanese ITBL Grid infrastructure using MpCCI

In order to accurately solve complex physical phenomena, interactions of various phenomena must be considered, which makes simulations multi-disciplinary. We have been developing a virtual nuclear reactor simulator on the ITBL Grid infrastructure in order to assess the safety of the nuclear reactors. This simulator system allows for numerical experiments on the full-scale and fully operational virtual nuclear reactors which is not possible in real-life experiments. In order to clarify various complex physical phenomena within the reactors, multi-disciplinary simulations, which are computationally demanding, are required. We have been developing a software to allow concurrent use of arbitrary combination of hardware and software to realize a multi-disciplinary simulation system on the ITBL. We have used STAMPI, developed by CCSE/JAERI, and MpCCI, developed by Fraunhofer SCAI, to construct the system. The system is now functional on the ITBL and will be introduced.

The Center for Promotion of Computational Science and Engineering of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute has carried out the ITBL (Information-Technology Based Laboratory) project which is one of e-Japan priority policy programs. AVS/ITBL is the visualization tool which has been developed aiming at realizing the efficient visualization in the ITBL environment. This visualization tool is one of the tools of ITBL infrastructure software and operates in cooperation with AVS/Express. In this paper, utilization of AVS/ITBL to the numerical environmental system, which is one of the applications in ITBL project, is presented. And the outline of the operation in this utilization is indicated.

Development of a meta-computing infrastructure for parallel coupled simulations

The numerical methods and computational hardware of today allow for studies on multi-disciplinary simulations. We have been developing an "integrated numerical simulation system" to solve coupled simulation problems under meta-computing environments. The system aims to construct a competent coupler for carrying out multi-disciplinary simulations by allowing concurrent execution of arbitrary simulation codes on different computers in parallel. The effectiveness of this system infrastructure is illustrated through its applications to fluid-structure interactive problems.

The pablic acceptance of nuclear power plants operations requests information of status for the safety and ease. Previous technology in computational scinece is generarlly carried out the analysis as an uniform structure, although the plants are assembled by thousand of parts. The proposed approach is to develope assembled structural analysis and fluid/heat analyis in assembled structures under the natural and actual environmnet such as daily operation, small quakeing which does not induce shut down procedure, and so on.

The construction of the ITBL environment is now on progress, and the clusters of supercomputer connected by high speed networks are now near the available stage. The fact means that the high end softwares and databases in various fields are near at have over the fence of the organization as well as the geographical distance. The Office of ITBL Promotion has been devoted to the equipment works of softwares and databases as well as the user support on the HPC technology, and planned to open the seminars and training courses on the various application softwares, (for example, bio, nano, fluid, structure etc.). In this article, the educational text for the finite element method(FEM), which is prepared for the use in the seminar for the researchers in the enterprises and universities who want to challenge a large scale FEM in the ITBL environment, is explained.

Virtual laboratory environment construction by ITBL project

ITBL (Information Technology Based Laboratory) project is promoted under the "e-Japan national priority program" by six research institutions. The project aims to construct a virtual laboratory which aid collaborative studies amongst researchers by allowing for sharing of intellectual properties and resources such as supercomputer hardware, software, data, etc. In order to realize this virtual laboratory environment, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute is developing an ITBL system infrastructure software system. Some of the highlighted functions offered by the ITBL infrastructure are: authentication for connecting to the supercomputers, parallel and distributed communication, job execution on the connected supercomputers, and formation of communities for aiding communication amongst researchers. In this passage, besides the introduction of the ITBL infrastructure, a brief introduction of the Quantum Bioinformatics and the Numerical Environmental Systems will be given as examples of the applications developed on the ITBL infrastructure.

The data display work of visualization is done in many research fields, and a lot of special softwares for the specific purposes exist today. But such softwares have an interface to only a small number of solvers. In many simulations, data conversion for visualization software is required between analysis and visualization for the practical use. This report describes the equipment work of the data visualization environment where AVS/Express was installed in corresponding to many requests from the users of the large-scale structural analysis system which is prepared as an ITBL community software. This environment enables to use the ITBL visualization server as a visualization device after the computation on the ITBL computer. Moreover, a lot of use will be expected within the community in the ITBL environment by merging it into ITBL/AVS environment in the future.
